Anganwadi at the hilly area of Thodumala which lies off Amboori across river neyyar. Anganwadi center was the brain child of late PM Mrs. Indira Gandhi. She started it in 1976 as part of 20 point programme for development. There are Anganwadis at every nook and corner of India, in fact one for every 1000 household. Anganwadi the Hindi word roughly translates "garden in the courtyard". These Anganwadi Centres in a block under the supervision of an officer known as child development project officer( CDPO) and the project is known as Integrated Child development scheme ( icds) project.In the early stages the icds scheme addressed reduction in infant mortality rate as the main target. Children in 0-6 age group, pregnant women and lactating mothers were identified as beneficiaries at the early stages itself. Down the timeline icds diversified it's services to adolescent girls and elderly. The anganwadi center (AWC) is manned by a lady anganwadi worker who gives pre primary education to children . Learning is based on activities and theme songs. Anganwadi worker is helped by a helper who cooks noon meal and keep the premises clean. In every panchayat there is a lady icds supervisor ,who supervises the activities of AWC s in that area. CDPOs are the officers who manage the project and they are women . The angawadi worker is selected from the same panchayat so she has grass root level knowledge about most of beneficiary families. There are 33000 Anganwadi Centres across Kerala which function under the department of women and child development,( WCD).
