I’m reviewing for a friend as I don’t like fish! She was bugging me for eel and after a few wrong turns and closed restaurants we found this spot (thank you google). She was super happy with the restaurant. Gave the eel 9/10. The restaurant has a great look, eel cartoons everywhere, giving the place a fun personality, whilst still remaining stylish. The waiters were lovely and the chef kept us entertained with his asbestos fingers! When we went there was no music and I think the room would have benefited from a little sound ambience. Also there is a minimum spend per diner of 2000. I managed to make this up with two veggie options and their AMAZING craft ale (brewed by them), but I do feel that is not the most welcoming vibe. I’m sure it makes sense for them but it feels inconsistent with the tone of the institution. So I’m marking them down a star so they can work on their ambience.

I really wanted to eat an eel meal in Kyoto and I stumbled upon this restaurant in a quiet street near hotel Shijo Kawaramachi. First there is an English menu and we tried to order a full course but being near to closing time, the chef explained it wasn't possible. Instead we ordered simple items and watched him grill the eels in front of us. The smoke from the charcoal was intoxicating in a way that set our taste buds on fire and it wasn't long before our order came. The eel on rice sets with pickled vegetable was a delight from the first grain of rice coated with eel sauce to the last drop of miso soup. The eel had tiny bones which melted in our mouth. After complementing the chef on the meal, we learned that the restaurant had been been open by chef Edogawa's family for over 100 years and he himself has been manning it for 45 years. They proudly showcase the City of Kyoto's commemorative plaque for the restaurant's longevity. Chef Edogawa left his kitchen briefly to bring me a headband featuring an eel on it, the same he's wearing. If you pay attention to the seemingly classical illustrations of eels in the restaurant, you'll find that some have English text in them. It was truly an unforgettable experience for our last night in Kyoto.

Simply the best unagi in Kyoto. The unagi is so fresh and not over sweetened by the sauce. The owner is the 4th generation managing this restaurant. Very under rated in tripadvisor. Probably because many tourists don't visit this restaurant.

Best Unagi I've ever had!

Compares favorably to another multi-generational unagi restaurant in Tokyo. Seasonings are meant to be light to entice the natural flavors of the unagi. Some may believe the rice to be slightly soft but that is the intended style. Service was warm and friendly.
